Why We Still Run Sessions in a Room

Most of what we teach travels fine over Zoom. You can watch someone build a chatbot on a shared screen just as well as you can standing behind them, and the recording means you can go back to the bit you missed.

So why keep booking rooms?

Because of what happens when someone gets stuck. Online, a person who cannot get a tool to work often goes quiet, and you only find out at the end that they spent forty minutes on one step. In a room, the person beside them notices in about ten seconds and leans over. Half the useful teaching in an in-person session is not coming from the front of the room at all.

The other thing is the afterwards. People stay back. They open their laptop and show us the actual spreadsheet they are working with, which is never the tidy example from the slides. That is usually where the real problem gets solved.

None of this means online is worse. The two formats do different jobs, and it is worth being honest about which one you need.
