Custom GPTs and ChatGPT Projects, Side by Side

AI Sharing #4 ran on 28 December 2024, on Custom GPTs and ChatGPT Projects.

These two get confused constantly, which is fair, because on the surface they look like the same idea. Both let you set something up once instead of re-explaining yourself every conversation.

The difference is who it is for. A Custom GPT is a tool you configure and then hand to other people, or use repeatedly for one defined job. A Project is a workspace that holds context for your own ongoing work: the files, the instructions, the thread of conversations that belong together.

Getting that distinction right saves a lot of wasted effort. People build elaborate Custom GPTs for something that was really just a Project, then wonder why it feels heavy.

The session ran on live demos and real examples rather than slides, which is the only way this particular topic lands. You have to see both being used before the difference is obvious.

Both are covered from the beginning in the AI Innovator Program. Upcoming AI Sharing dates are on the events page.
